Methods of discovery new planetary nebulae based on their characteristic
near-, mid- and far-infrared photometric colors are presented. We describe
how these methods operate and review the results obtained. Possible bias
effects introduced by the selection criteria applied are also discussed.
These methods have been proved to be efficient in finding new candidate
planetary nebulae in our Galaxy. Their possible application to
extragalactic searches is here discussed.
