Simultaneous observations in I, J and Ks wave bands allow us to statistically select AGB stars, both C and M type, from RGB and other younger or foreground stars in nearby galaxies. I will discuss regions of different metallicity identified from the distribution of the C/M ratio. The latter varies considerably across the surface of the Magellanic Clouds and NGC6822.
