3- JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Stylistic Convention

In this document, "he" and "his" refer to the position described. In practice, these position can be occupied by people of any gender.

Telescope and Instrument Operator

The TIO is a full time member of SciOp, whose responsibilities encompass

Astronomer

Also called Faculty Astronomer, devoting a minimum of 105 nights time to duties for SciOp at La Silla (105n being the target), the remainder of his working time being devoted to his personal researches. His duties toward SciOp include

Operation Astronomer

Abbreviated as OpA, an astronomer devoting 80% of his time (125 nights, with flexibility at the 5-10% level - it should be noted that currently, individual contracts fluctuate between 120 and 135n; this should be uniformized in the future) to duties for SciOp, the remainder of his working time being devoted to his personal researches. It must be however noted that the scientific production of an OpA is not taken into account in his evaluation.

Fellow Astronomer

Abbreviated at Fellow. Junior astronomer devoting 80 nights (with some flexibility at the ~5-10% level) at La Silla and 35 days at Vitacura to duties for the SciOp Department, the remainder of his working time being devoted to his personal researches. His duties toward SciOp include

Operation Engineer

An Operation Engineer (full time staff) has the following responsibilities within SciOp:

Head of Science Operation

In addition to being an Astronomer in SciOp, the Head of Science Operation (HoSciOp) has management and administrative tasks, described in LSO-SPE-ESO-00100-0004. The total of his duties (Astronomer plus HoSciOp) amount to 50% of his working time, i.e. a minimum of 105n (105n being the target).
