ESO Scientific Software

This page gives an introduction and overview of the Science Software available to users. Additional software, in particular tools for preparing Phase I proposals and Phase II Observing Blocks, are available via the Observing Tools and Services. Links to web based tools (like the ETC's) are also provided from there. Information about data pipelines for ESO Instruments is also available. Beyond that various specific scientific software packages have been installed at ESO to support research activities.

Note that general computer maintenance and support is provided by the IT Department.

The following links can be useful for general purpose computing and scientific software issues:
  • Scisoft is a collection of astronomical software utilities, mostly public domain tools developed outside ESO, which has been installed in a uniform way at all four ESO sites. This collection is also available for external distribution without support.
  • Sampo Project: ESO/Finland collaboration on future data analysis.
  • ESO IT Home Page, providing information on all computers at ESO Garching [ESO Intranet].
  • Astronomical Software Experience at ESO [ESO Intranet]
This page lists the specific expertise among ESO Students and Fellows on astronomical software.
