Video News Release 3: Into the Invisible with ISAAC

ESO Video News Reel 3 ("Into the Invisible with ISAAC") is published on January 26, 1999. It contains video material related to recent work with the ISAAC multi-mode instrument at the VLT UT1. The video begins with a zoom-in towards a dark cloud in the Milky Way, as seen in visible light. The same region, now recorded in infrared light, shows a starforming region, hidden within the cloud. Some sequences follow from the servicing of ISAAC at the Nasmyth focus of the first 8.2-m VLT Unit Telescope (UT1). The astronomers and engineers prepare the night's observations from the VLT Control Room. The telescope turns and the first astronomical images appear on the screen. Then follows a series of some of the "ISAAC First Light" images and a related statement by the ISAAC Principal Investigator (PI). An appendix contains extensive scenes with the turning telescope, its mirrors and mechanical structure, as seen from different angles.

This Video News Release is targeted especially at broadcasters for further editing. In order to keep the audio tracks editable, different sound information has been recorded on two separate tracks at optimal volumes as is common standard in professional post production. This video is not meant for on screen viewing — on ESOcasts are better suited for that.
