December 2016

Dear Fellow Communicators,

We would like to wish you and your families a joyful holiday season and a Happy New Year! 2017 is going to be an exciting year for ESO as we continue to prepare content and operations ready for the opening of the largest tilted planetarium in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, together with our founding partners, the Klaus Tschira Stiftung and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies and a starry team of many other supporters, donors and volunteers. The ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre offers us the chance to produce free planetarium outreach products and educational materials for the community. We hope you will benefit from our work!

If you are still looking for Christmas gift ideas, bear in mind that our ESOshop will close toward the end of next week as we go on holiday. Until then, you can order warm, slim-fit jackets, astronomical books, stunning mounted images or nebula-wrapped mugs.

In case you missed the news, the IAU has formally approved 227 star names! Read all about it here.

Early next year, those of you who subscribe to the print version of CAP journal will receive issue 21. This will be the last issue you receive in print form unless you have already confirmed your subscription or do so by the deadline indicated inside issue 21. Follow the instructions written in the journal and make sure you don’t throw away the envelope — it has a unique code written on the address label that you will need.

Planning ahead, we would like to let you know that Japan has won the bid to host the 2018 Communicating Astronomy with the Public Conference. The event will take place in March 2018. We will provide you with more details soon.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!

Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
