August 2016

Dear Fellow Communicators,

We have a series of interesting events to draw your attention to, which can help you in your professional career.

The first of the Jcom Masterclasses 2016 courses, entitled “Developing successful museums and science centres”, will start on 26 September 2016 and deadline for registration is 19 August 2016. So hurry up to register.

The PARI2017 workshop on "Communicating the importance of science to society" will be held between 29 and 30 May 2017, at ESO’s Headquarters. This time the EIROforum will join us in the organisation. Registration and abstract submission will open in November 2016 so please save the date. Topics will include: Evaluation of communication activities and impact; Public engagement through visitor programmes and exhibitions; Unconventional outreach: thinking out of the box; Funding for communication outside the known pathways; Engaging the scientists; Using online social media channels; Enhancing collaboration at research campuses, clusters, and projects; Branding and visual identity; Communicating on a small budget; Issues Management and Crisis Communication. Further information can be found here.

Don’t forget that up to 20 August 2016 you can apply to host the next Communicating Astronomy with the Public 2018 conference — an excellent opportunity to stimulate astronomy communication where you are.

If you work with students aged between 16 and 18 years old, encourage them to sign up for the 4th ESO Astronomy Camp. The deadline for applying for a bursary is 4 October 2016. The camp will take place from 26 December 2016 to 1 January 2017 in Italy and it is organised by ESO and its Science Outreach Network, together with the science education event organiser Sterrenlab and OAVdA.

22 October is another date to save in your calendar. It’s Open House Day at our Headquarters in Garching bei München, Germany. More details about the event will soon be published on our website.

Before closing this editorial, we have two more things to share with you.

In July we had the pleasure of welcoming two new Photo Ambassadors to our network: Heiko Sommer and Alessandro Caproni. We invite you to discover their photos on the Photo Ambassador page.

The ESO Calendar 2017 is now online. As one of our most popular products, it usually runs out fast so we encourage you to buy your copy right away!

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together!
