We hope you have the time for some vacation! July tends to be rather quiet in our region as many people are away. But we still have some projects where we can share some updates with you.
The building for the ESO Supernova Planetarium & Visitor Centre is growing as each day passes. And so is the body of work needed to organise our content and programmes for the public. We are also working on new products for our shop at the ESO Supernova. If you know of any products that are very popular or are in demand by the public, we would appreciate hearing from you! Otherwise, you can watch progress on the building here, while updates in content will be announced on our webpage, the public newsletter and on social media (English Facebook Page, German Facebook Page, English Twitter account, German Twitter account).
These days you can find some of us at the International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Drop in to the press office or the ESO exhibition to meet us!
If you are looking for something to read during your summer travels, the latest edition of the CAPjournal is a good choice. Issue 17 has just appeared, including articles on the outreach that was done for the Google Lunar XPrize competition, ten challenges to overcome when producing an astronomical gigapixel image, how to build a tactile planetarium and more.
If you have read this far, we know that you are someone who is very interested in astronomy communication. So the Communicating Astronomy with the Public (CAP) 2016 conference in Colombia is a not-to-be-missed opportunity for you! Follow the Facebook page and the Twitter hashtag #CAP2016, as we will soon issue some updates! You can also sign up to this mailing list to receive notifications from us.
Finally, we are excited to announce that we have recently begun to work in partnership with Social Sign In for the management of our social media channels. After our first test runs we will share our experience with you. If you are using the platform already, please send us some tips!
Last, but not least, don’t forget to encourage your students to sign up for the third ESO Astronomy Camp. The participants, aged 16–18, will be exploring the topics of the Solar System and extrasolar planets, as well as making friends and having a great time doing winter sports activities in the beautiful region of the Aosta Valley, Italy.
