OCT2001 release is intended to be an internal only release.

* DISCLAIMER
  Please take note that although the VLTSW, in the NOCSS and CCSLite 
  versions, have been ported to Linux, there is currently no instrument 
  or major VLT subsystem based on that platform. Users who intend to use 
  the VLTSW under Linux should therefore bear in mind that although the 
  individual software modules pass their modular tests, a validation at 
  higher level is still pending.

OCT2001 contains some additional patches for the following 
Operating System: 
HP-UX 10.20, HP-UX 11.00, SUN. 
These patches are supplied by the official HP and SUN support 
sites and their installation is strongly recommended. 
We prepared a CD per each OS containing the official 
JUNE 2001 patches. For HP (10.20 and 11) we also 
have a few additional patches available on our ftp site. 
For any further information, please refer to the 
"VLT Common Software - Combined OS Installation Manual" 
VLT-MAN-ESO-17200-2238, issue 1.3, section 9.2. 
There, you will find the procedure for installing the 
patches from the cd(s) and downloading the additional ones 
from our ftp server. 


Features 

1. HP-UX 10.20: no major changes. Full CCS will run 
   on this platform only.

2. CCSLite will be the only version available for SUN 
   and HP-UX 11.00
 
3. The compiler has not changed: we have gcc 2.95.2.
   Some gnu tools have been upgraded: 
   GNU binutils 2.10
   GNU gdb 5.0
   The following gnu tools have been added: 
   GNU m4 1.4
   GNU autoconf 2.52

4. tcltk changed to version 8.3.3
   Please refer to the tcl/tk release notes and 
   portability guidelines.

5. New version of VxWorks Tornado 2.0.2, 
   this will be the only version for all platforms.
   The disk space requirements change because of this new Tornado 
   distribution, that increased up to the double!

6. JAVA platform: JDK 1.1.8 + SWING 1.1 
   This is the same version as in MAR2001.
   You can just create a link from the /vlt/OCT2001 directory 
   or, better, copy the java directory from MAR2001 to OCT2001.

Distribution

The release distribution is limited to internal ESO sites.
